When goal setting sucks…

No motivation?

If you’ve ever found that you struggle with motivating yourself, setting goals and visualizing them each day; if you’ve ever found that after setting your goals it just doesn’t feel as good and motivating as you thought it would, or if you’ve ever found yourself sabotaging your own efforts to set new goals then most likely you don’t belong to the new-age goal setter society…

Whatever, there is always an other way to go: if you don’t belong to the group of goal achievers you can still be hyper-successful by being an exceptional problem solver.
Today I challenge you to join me and find out your own style by recognizing your strengths and weaknesses and turn your efforts into achievements.
According to the researches people are either goal setters or problem solvers. Just go through the characteristics of both groups and decide which of them you belong to.

You are most likely a Goal setter if:

  • you are a positive visionary—seeing the big picture ahead
  • you surround yourself with your goals (like pictures, notes, quotes on the wall or in your wallet)
  • you are always the one who inspires and motivates others
  • you need to be free and reach your destination your style
  • you don’t hesitate to take the risk for reaching higher levels
  • if you need always new goals to keep you energized
  • if you easily become bored after achieving a goal
  • “others” often see you unrealistic, or too optimistic
  • you don’t spend to much time with working on details
  • you are simply not a how-to-guy

You are most likely a Problem solver if:

  • you are a realist and keep your feet always on the ground
  • your life is a series of tasks to be accomplished
  • you immediately see the details that others often miss
  • you always follow your to-do-list
  • others might see you as negative
  • you only take risk after extensively researching the situation
  • you often worry about the cost of a possible failure
  • you find difficult problems kind of energizing
  • you always focus on the problem itself
  • you are good in finding and working out a solution

Just by being aware of this big difference in the way we are naturally “programed”, can save you lots of frustration.

Now, solving problems might not sound as exciting as setting goals; if you might think now that dreamers achieve more than problems solvers than this is the perfect timing for sharing with you a little behind the scenes secret of the Dreamer community (hint: I know this first hand because I’m the dreamer of the dreamers; my family and friends always say that I’m viewing the world through my pink glasses):

Behind every visionary who’s dreaming up the goals to accomplish and deciding on the deadlines there are always others in the background, taking those visions and figuring out how to turn them into achievable step-by-step plans. Those “magicians” are the Problem-solvers.

In each successful team there are people who dream big, set higher goals and are able to see outside the box and people who are gifted in problem-solving, and can keep their feet on the ground, so to speak. So don’t be critical toward yourself if you don’t feel the excitement of the dream-setting-community.

You are perfect in the way you are!

    Hi Krisztina,
Thanks for the insight. Sometimes I’m a goal setter. Sometimes I’m a problem solver. And a lot of the time I’m just tap dancing as fast as I can to keep up! :-)

    Hi Krisztina,

I consider myself a goal setter by your measures. And the problem solving comes in at times as well – as Marylin put it: the tap dancing situation :o )

Thanks for giving me an impulse – knowing I am a goal setter helps in my process!

    Big hug from Northern Frisia,

    Barbara

I just read this. I think I’m a combination of both. How can I work it so that I can achieve the most of a goal with these two characteristics?
